1. Managing Numbness and Initial Sensitivity
Numbness: Your tooth and surrounding area will be numb for a few hours after the procedure due to the local anesthetic. Avoid chewing on the treated side until the numbness completely wears off to prevent accidentally biting your cheek or tongue.
Initial Sensitivity: It’s common to experience some mild sensitivity to hot, cold, or pressure for a few days after your crown is placed. This is normal as the tooth adjusts.
Pain Relief: Any discomfort can typically be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen (e.g., Nurofen) or paracetamol (e.g., Panadol), as advised by your Denticare dentist.
2. Caring for Your Temporary Crown (If Applicable)
Temporary vs. Permanent: If you received a temporary crown, it is designed for short-term use and is not as strong as your permanent crown.
Avoid Sticky/Hard Foods: Do not eat sticky or very hard foods (like gum, caramels, hard nuts, or raw vegetables) that could pull off or break the temporary crown.
Chew Gently: Try to chew on the opposite side of your mouth.
Brush & Floss Gently: Brush normally, but be very gentle when flossing around the temporary crown. Instead of lifting the floss out, slide it out from the side to avoid dislodging the crown.
If it Comes Off: If your temporary crown comes off, try to re-seat it if possible with a tiny dab of toothpaste or denture adhesive, and contact Denticare immediately for re-cementation. Do not attempt to glue it with household adhesives.
3. Caring for Your Permanent Crown
Biting and Chewing: Your new permanent crown should feel like a natural part of your tooth. Once the initial sensitivity subsides, you can chew normally. If your bite feels “off” or uncomfortable after the numbness wears off, please contact us for an adjustment.
Oral Hygiene is Key:
Brush Twice Daily: Brush your crown just as you would your natural teeth, twice a day for two minutes, using a fluoride toothpaste.
Floss Daily: Floss around your crown every day to remove plaque and food particles, especially between the crown and adjacent teeth. Crowns can still be susceptible to decay at the gum line if not properly cleaned.
Avoid Harmful Habits:
Do not chew on ice, hard sweets, popcorn kernels, or unpopped popcorn.
Avoid using your teeth to open packages or bite nails.
If you grind or clench your teeth (bruxism), discuss this with your dentist, as a nightguard may be recommended to protect your crown and other teeth.
4. When to Contact Denticare Immediately:
Persistent Pain or Sensitivity: If pain or sensitivity increases or persists significantly beyond a few days.
Uncomfortable Bite: If your bite feels uneven or uncomfortable after the numbness wears off.
