Following Your Dental Extraction at Denticare North Dublin

At Denticare in North Dublin, your comfort and swift recovery are our top priorities following a dental extraction. To ensure the best possible healing, please follow these instructions carefully. If you have any concerns or experience unexpected symptoms, do not hesitate to contact us directly at 0874154835.

1. Managing Bleeding (The First Few Hours)

  • Keep the Gauze Pad in Place: You will leave the clinic with a gauze pad over the extraction site. Bite down firmly on this gauze for at least 30-45 minutes to help form a blood clot.
  • Change Gauze as Needed: If bleeding persists, replace the gauze with a fresh, clean pad (or a damp tea bag wrapped in gauze) and bite down firmly for another 30 minutes. Repeat as necessary until bleeding subsides to a pink tinge.
  • Avoid Excessive Spitting/Rinsing: This can dislodge the crucial blood clot. Swallow saliva gently.

2. Pain Management

  • Take Medication as Directed: Start taking any prescribed pain medication (e.g., ibuprofen, paracetamol) as soon as the local anesthetic begins to wear off, or as advised by your Denticare dentist. Do not wait for severe pain to begin.
  • Over-the-Counter Options: For mild discomfort, over-the-counter pain relievers can be effective.

3. Swelling Control (First 24-48 Hours)

  • Apply Ice Pack: Apply an ice pack (or a bag of frozen peas wrapped in a cloth) to the outside of your cheek, over the extraction site. Apply for 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off, for the first 24 hours. This helps minimize swelling.
  • Elevate Your Head: When resting or sleeping, keep your head elevated with pillows.

4. Diet & Hydration (First Few Days)

  • Soft Foods: Stick to soft, easy-to-chew foods for the first 24-48 hours (e.g., soups, yogurt, mashed potatoes, smoothies – but don’t use a straw!). Gradually reintroduce solid foods as comfort allows.
  • Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of fluids (water, clear broths) but avoid using a straw as the suction can dislodge the blood clot.
  • Avoid Hot Beverages/Foods: For the first 24 hours, avoid very hot drinks or foods that could irritate the site.

5. Oral Hygiene (Crucial for Healing)

  • Do NOT Rinse Vigorously: For the first 24 hours after extraction, avoid vigorous rinsing, gargling, or spitting.
  • Gentle Rinsing (After 24 Hours): Starting 24 hours after the extraction, gently rinse your mouth with a warm salt water solution (half a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water) after meals and before bed. Do this gently and let the water fall out of your mouth rather than spitting forcefully.
  • Brush Gently: You can continue to brush your teeth, but be very gentle around the extraction site for several days. Avoid touching the healing area directly.

6. Rest & Activity

  • Rest is Key: Get plenty of rest for the first 24-48 hours. Avoid strenuous physical activity, heavy lifting, or bending over, as this can increase bleeding and dislodge the blood clot.
  • Avoid Disturbing the Site: Do not poke the extraction site with your fingers or tongue.

7. Things to Avoid (Very Important!)

  • NO Smoking: Smoking significantly hinders healing and greatly increases the risk of a painful “dry socket.” Avoid it for at least 48-72 hours, or ideally, completely.
  • NO Alcohol: Avoid alcohol for at least 24-48 hours, as it can thin the blood and delay healing.
  • NO Straws: As mentioned, the suction can dislodge the blood clot.
  • NO Hard/Crunchy/Sticky Foods: These can irritate the wound or get stuck in the socket.

8. When to Contact Denticare Immediately:

  • Excessive Bleeding: If bleeding is heavy and persistent after 2-3 hours of applying direct pressure with gauze.
  • Severe or Worsening Pain: If pain is severe, constant, and not relieved by medication after a few days, or if it suddenly worsens.
  • Pus or Foul Taste/Smell: Signs of infection.
  • High Fever or Chills: Signs of a systemic infection.
  • Swelling that increases significantly after 2-3 days.
  • Numbness that persists beyond the expected duration of the anesthetic.
  • Dry Socket: A dull, throbbing pain that usually starts 2-4 days after the extraction, possibly radiating to your ear, and an unpleasant taste/smell.
