Following Your Dental Implant Procedure at Denticare North Dublin

Congratulations on taking a significant step towards restoring your smile with a dental implant at Denticare in North Dublin! This procedure lays the foundation for a strong, lasting tooth replacement. Proper aftercare is crucial for successful healing and the long-term integration of your implant.

Please read and follow these instructions carefully. If you have any concerns or experience unexpected symptoms at any time, do not hesitate to contact us directly at 0874154835.

1. Immediate Post-Procedure Care (First Few Hours)

  • Pressure on Gauze: You will leave the clinic with a gauze pad placed over the surgical site. Apply gentle, firm pressure by biting down for 30-60 minutes. This helps form a stable blood clot, which is essential for healing.
  • Replace Gauze if Needed: If bleeding persists, replace the gauze with a fresh, clean pad (or a damp tea bag wrapped in gauze) and apply pressure for another 30 minutes. Repeat as necessary until bleeding subsides to a light pink tinge.
  • Avoid Disturbing the Site: Do not touch the surgical area with your fingers or tongue. Avoid excessive spitting or rinsing for the first 24 hours.

2. Managing Bleeding

  • Some oozing or slight bleeding is normal for the first 24-48 hours. If bleeding is heavy or persistent, apply firm pressure with gauze for 30 minutes, then contact Denticare.

3. Pain Management

  • Medication: Take any prescribed pain medication (e.g., strong pain relievers) as directed by your Denticare dentist. Begin taking it before the local anesthetic completely wears off.
  • Over-the-Counter: For mild to moderate discomfort, over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen (e.g., Nurofen) or paracetamol (e.g., Panadol) can be used, following the package directions.

4. Swelling Control (First 48-72 Hours)

  • Ice Pack: Apply an ice pack (or a bag of frozen peas wrapped in a cloth) to the outside of your cheek, over the surgical area. Apply for 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off, for the first 24-48 hours. This is most effective in minimizing swelling.
  • Elevate Your Head: When resting or sleeping, keep your head elevated with an extra pillow to help reduce swelling.

5. Diet & Hydration

  • Soft Foods: For the first few days, stick to a diet of soft, lukewarm foods. Avoid hot foods or liquids during the first 24 hours. Examples include yogurt, soup (lukewarm), mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, smoothies (without a straw).
  • Avoid Chewing on the Implant Site: Until instructed otherwise, try to chew on the opposite side of your mouth from the implant site.
  • Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of fluids (water, clear broths) but do NOT use a straw, as the suction can dislodge the blood clot and disrupt healing.

6. Oral Hygiene (Gentle & Crucial)

  • First 24 Hours: Do not rinse vigorously or spit forcefully. You can gently brush other areas of your mouth, but avoid the surgical site.
  • After 24 Hours:
    • Gentle Salt Water Rinses: Begin gently rinsing your mouth with a warm salt water solution (half a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water) 2-3 times a day, especially after meals and before bed. Allow the water to trickle out of your mouth rather than spitting forcefully.
    • Gentle Brushing: You may gently brush the teeth near the surgical site. Avoid direct brushing of the implant site itself until advised by your dentist.
    • Prescribed Mouthwash: If prescribed an antiseptic mouthwash (e.g., Chlorhexidine), use it as directed.

7. Rest & Activity

  • Rest: Get plenty of rest for the first 24-48 hours after surgery. Avoid strenuous physical activity, heavy lifting, or bending over, as this can increase bleeding and swelling.
  • Avoid Disturbing: Do not poke or prod the implant site with your fingers or tongue.

8. Important Things to AVOID:

  • SMOKING: This is CRITICAL. Smoking significantly impairs healing and greatly increases the risk of implant failure. Avoid smoking entirely, especially for the first week post-surgery, or ideally, for longer.
  • Alcohol: Avoid alcohol for at least 48 hours, as it can interfere with healing and interact with medications.
  • Straws: Avoid using straws (as mentioned above).
  • Hard, Crunchy, or Sticky Foods: These can damage the healing site or any temporary prosthesis.
  • Excessive Spitting/Rinsing: For the first 24 hours.

9. Temporary Prosthesis/Denture (If Applicable)

  • If you have a temporary denture or bridge, it may need to be adjusted or left out to avoid putting pressure on the implant site during healing. Follow your dentist’s specific instructions.

10. Follow-Up Appointments

  • Regular follow-up appointments are essential to monitor the healing process and ensure the implant is integrating properly. Please attend all scheduled appointments at Denticare.

11. When to Contact Denticare Immediately:

  • Severe or Worsening Pain: If pain is severe, constant, and not relieved by medication, or if it suddenly worsens after a few days.
  • Excessive/Persistent Bleeding: Bleeding that doesn’t stop after applying pressure with gauze.
  • Significant Swelling: Swelling that increases substantially after 2-3 days, or if you develop swelling in your throat.
  • Pus or Foul Taste/Smell: Signs of infection.
  • Fever or Chills: Signs of systemic infection.
  • Numbness: If numbness persists in your lip, chin, or tongue beyond 24 hours.
  • Implant Feels Loose: Though rare, if the implant feels loose.

The team at Denticare North Dublin is committed to ensuring your successful recovery and the long-term health of your new dental implant. We are here to support you every step of the way.
