Following Your Exam, Scale & Polish at Denticare North Dublin

Congratulations on completing your dental exam, scale, and polish at Denticare in North Dublin! You’ve taken a crucial step towards maintaining a healthy and radiant smile. Your teeth are now thoroughly clean, and your gums are on their way to optimal health.

Here’s what to expect and how to care for your teeth and gums in the days following your visit. If you have any concerns or experience unexpected symptoms, please do not hesitate to contact us directly at 0874154835.

1. What to Expect Immediately After

  • Temporary Sensitivity: It’s quite common to experience some mild sensitivity to hot, cold, or even air for a few hours, or occasionally a few days, after a scale and polish. This is especially true if you had significant plaque or tartar buildup, as your gums may be slightly tender. This sensitivity is usually temporary and will subside as your gums heal.
  • Gum Tenderness/Bleeding: Your gums might feel a little tender or even bleed slightly when you brush or floss immediately after your appointment. This is normal, particularly if there was inflammation present. With continued good oral hygiene, this should quickly resolve.

2. Managing Sensitivity

  • Sensitive Toothpaste: If you experience sensitivity, using a toothpaste specifically designed for sensitive teeth (containing ingredients like potassium nitrate or strontium chloride) can provide relief.
  • Avoid Extremes: For the first few hours, you might find it more comfortable to avoid very hot or cold foods and drinks.

3. Maintaining Your Sparkling Smile (Home Care is Key!)

  • Brush Thoroughly: Continue to brush your teeth twice a day for at least two minutes each time, using a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Be gentle but thorough, paying attention to all surfaces of your teeth and along the gum line.
  • Floss Daily: Daily flossing (or using interdental brushes) is essential to remove plaque and food particles from between your teeth and under the gum line, areas your toothbrush can’t reach. This is critical to prevent future plaque and tartar buildup.
  • Mouthwash (Optional): If you use mouthwash, choose an alcohol-free, fluoride-containing one.

4. Diet Considerations

  • Protect Your Polish (Especially After Whitening): If you also had laser teeth whitening during your visit, or if you’re simply looking to extend the brightness of your polish, try to avoid highly staining foods and drinks for the first 24-48 hours. These include coffee, tea, red wine, dark berries, highly colored sauces, and fizzy drinks.

5. Long-Term Oral Health

  • Regular Check-ups: Regular dental exams and professional cleanings are vital for maintaining excellent oral health. Your Denticare team will recommend a recall schedule (typically every 6-12 months) based on your individual needs. Following this schedule helps us detect and address issues early.

6. When to Contact Denticare:

  • Persistent Pain or Sensitivity: If sensitivity or pain persists beyond a few days or worsens.
  • Excessive Bleeding: If gum bleeding is heavy or continues for more than a day after your cleaning.
  • Unusual Swelling: If you notice any swelling in your gums or face.

We’re delighted to have helped you achieve a cleaner, healthier smile. The team at Denticare North Dublin looks forward to seeing you at your next routine check-up!
